Gert Jan Bruggink began riding at a young age as riding runs in his family, his partner Pia-Luise Aufrecht competes at an international level, and his sister Marleen is also an elite showjumper. Bruggink quickly made a name for himself in Junior and Young Rider competitions, winning European Championship medals in 1997, 2000, and 2001. He stepped up to senior competitions in 2003, competing at the European Championships where his team finished 8th.
The following year, Gert Jan represented his country at the 2004 Olympic Games, finishing 4th in the Team event. He also competed at the 2002 World Championships and continued to build his international experience.
